BBC SATBACK Service has moved from Intelsat 901 27.5°W

The Freeview backup service often termed ‘BBC SATBACK Service’ on Intelsat 901 at 27.5°W was finally switched off last week (04-04-2024) following many years of transmission and has found a new home on Telstar 12 at 15.0°W.

Thousands of UK ex-pats are reeling across Southern Spain and Portugal following the closure, as the Satback service on Intelsat was a great free way to keep in touch with programming from home. Although the service was encrypted, and the transmission was never intended for direct reception by viewers, many satellite receivers like Technomate, Cryptobox and Icecrypt would pick up the signal.

The new home of the Satback service on Telstar 12 is a mirror of the old Intelsat one but with a much tighter UK footprint which can no longer be picked up in Southern Europe.

What’s the Solution?

As an alternative, satellite viewers in Southern Spain and Portugal can resume viewing of BBC/ITV/Channel4/Channel5 via the Kabelio package located on Hotbird offering a much stronger signal meaning your existing dish located on Intelsat can be utilised.

BBC News HD missing! Where has it gone?

Yesterday the HD version of BBC News (channel 107) was removed from the Freeview (tv aerial) platform. Quest HD has gone too!

Whilst the BBC News SD channel will remain available via your tv aerial it doesn't compare in picture quality to the HD variant.

BBC News HD is still available FTA (free to air) via satellite on Astra2 (Sky satellite) and on BBC iPlayer.

If you have an old Sky dish and your TV is a reasonably modern HD TV with a satellite tuner built-in (the threaded connector on the rear) the good news is you will be able to tune to BBC News HD right away.

Notice to BIS Subscribers

Following a technical problem with the satellite broadcasting, during the weekend. It is necessary to re-tune the Hotbird frequency 12437H, 27500, 3/4 (Hot Bird) via the menu of your decoder / television, to regain access to the BIS channels.

At present we are unsure if this issue is temporary or long-lasting.

How to Update Zaap TV X Set Top Box

INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO UPDATE ZAAP TV X SET TOP BOX

Update instructions if your Zaap TV X is either frozen or not operating correctly.

Download and copy to a USB stick the latest firmware from the Zaap TV website

Check the picture the picture below to see how to acces the diagnostic screen.

1. Keep the highlighted button pressed with the device unplugged from ac power and plug the power cord and slowly count to 10.
   It should boot to recovery and you can flash the latest firmware and do a factory reset.
2. Connect the USB with the downloaded file.
3. In the diagnostic screen select Apply update from EXT.
4. Select Update from udisk and then select the file zaaptv-ota-20170206.zip
5. Wait until the update process is finished.
